Episode #23 – Sabu vs Funk BORN TO BE WIRED Mini-cast!
We review a classic ECW match in which a 60+ year old man gets his flesh ripped off by barbed wire and we learn that someone’s Mom bought their son this video for Christmas.

I only have one correction this time: Funk was 53 or 54 for this match, not 65.
Now that that’s out of the way…
I loved Dre’s impression of his mom. Born to be Weird = priceless.
The Doctor is in is the first ECW show I ever saw. We borrowed the tape from a friend’s friend and my brother rolled onto the remote control while sleeping and accidentally taped over the last minutes of the RVD vs. Sabu match with the Spice Girls 2 Become 1 video. It was pretty embarrassing giving the tape back to the friend of a friend I borrowed it from.
This match is awesome because of the presentation and emotion it stirs up. I certainly wasn’t sure if I ever wanted to see it again after seeing it for the first time. I have seen it since though and it holds up over time.
I liked The Doctor Is In because of the Sabu RVD match but I was also a huge Dr Death mark when I was a kid. i think I got the Born to be Wired match from a mutual friend, Hardcore.
And I’m not sure what emotion you’re talking about if it’s not complete horror and disgust. 😉 Hope this podcast was everything you were hoping for as I know you were looking forward to it.
By emotion I meant that horror feeling that “oh crap, something baaaaaaaaaad’s gonna happen to one of these guys, if not both of them”.
I believe Terry Funk wanted to bring an exploding ring match to the ECW arena. When that didn’t happen I’m sure they did this match instead.
That is an awesome bit of trivia I did not know. Thanks!
I haven’t seen this, and your description of Sabu’s bleeding bicep made think that’s probably a good thing. I love both Funk and Sabu (including his “botched” spots) but that part sounds disgusting. It was fun to listen too, though. So I lift my hat, Terry Funk stylee, and say thanks for another top notch podcast experience, guys.
The injury to Sabu’s bicep kept him wearing the strip of cloth over the scar form then on, didn’t it?
Today, I just facepalm over Sabu’s garbage style of match, but then, it was intense and brutal, or so it seemed.
I love your show, fellas! (Oh man, I’m suddenly Sheamus!)
