Feb. 23, 1987 Madison Square Garden six-man Elimination match.
Roddy Piper, Junkyard Dog and Ricky Steamboat vs Adrian Adonis, Randy Savage and Harley Race. classic match with piper a star at the end
Great show guys.
I can’t believe hot rod is gone!
Best Piper moment for me is him smashing the award over captain Lou albino’s head, kicking cyndi Lauder and power slamming her wimpy manager Dave wolf right in the middle of the ring at MSG.
Another true legend gone. Think about it. Only flair and hogan left of the top tier 80s wrestling boom superstars!
Also 1st bad guy that was too cool that I can remember is superstar billy Graham when he was wwwf champ
Quick 1,2,3
1. Sumo Monster Truck: Before I was a fun of wrestling I was a diehard monster truck fan. Living outside of St. Louis I was a diehard Bigfoot fan. I ask my parents a few times to order the pay per view just for the monster truck part frankly at the time I couldn’t care less about the wrestling part I WANTED TO SEE SUMO MONSTER TRUCKS!!! The in results no dice for buying the show. Fast forward few months later seeing the Dungeon of Doom (Bigfoot 8) at the first dome show in St. Louis planted the seeds. It wasn’t till later that fall watching Bigfoot trucks on TNN is when I tuned in to Monday Nitro and never turned back since then.
2. I don’t know if this counts, but Famous Guest referees: Maybe except for Mike Tyson. Famous guest referees seems short of dumb I can’t put my finger on it why, never been a fan of this type of gimmick.
3. Flag Match: Was at the “Bad Blood” in St. Louis Hart Foundation vs. Vader & Patriot I was only 11 and wanted to see Bret Hart. I got bored went to get a hot dog and got more Hart swag.
I know you didn’t want Vince Russo’s matches, but I have to share this. I back in the day (i.e) 2007 I bought tickets to Lockdown in St. Louis. Just for one reason only the “Electrified Cage Match” I was a big fan of LAX and I enjoyed the few “CZW Cage of Death” videos I found on youtube at the time. The sick S.O.B. in me was hoping to see something like the C.O.D., but instead it was a joke. My dream crashed like a “tough enough” winner.
Not a women’s wrestling historian by any means, but I imagine the last Mexican Woman’s champ was a stocky old woman in a luchador mask who went by the name El Moolah de Fabulosa. Again, purely speculation…
Ahoy boys.
Just finished reading the Gary Hart book, and he does briefly touch on the potential copyright infringement of naming their WCCW megacard “Wrestling Star Wars” — they actually did go to a lawyer and ask if it the show be named that without them getting sued, and surprisingly, the answer was yes, they could name it that. I guess putting “Wrestling” in front of “Star Wars” wholly changes the meaning….? or something.
Quick point regarding the “Mexican National Women’s Championship” match, apparently that was something that WCCW/Fritz/Hart did often, just decide to make up titles that didnt actually exist for an attraction on their cards.
At one point WCCW had also had an “All-Asian Heavyweight Title” and an “All-Asian Tag Team Title” too (no relation to the AJPW titles of the same name) which were just on the scene one day. If I remember correctly, Great Kabuki held both of those on different occasions, but it was one of those “he won them in a tournament overseas” type announcements.
In summation, World Class kicked ass for a few years.
Fun show as always!
RIP Piper.
My quick 1-2-3 for some odd gimmick matches:
The RAW Bowl. Don’t remember the rules, but it happened on a RAW maybe during College Bowl time. The scoring was convoluted and it was a tag match…there wasn’t a RAW Bowl 2.
The crybaby match between Razor and 1-2-3 Kid. In it the Kid had a diaper put on him and was covered in baby powder…hilarity ensued.
Any gimmick match where the winner would get the “services” of a female valet, but the one that stands out to me is when Pillman won Marlena from Goldust. Pillman would send in videos from the road implying the things he was doing to Goldust’s wife, presumably against her wishes…pretty f’ed up on a lot of levels if you overthink it.
Thanks for the great show guys, hope to hear a sweet Summer Slam show this month!
Quite an entertaining match up. The big blue dot and paint like hair remover did make me laugh. I wonder how many matches ended up with a trunk pull. Quite a few I’d think, although I’m not conviced of the extra added pressue. Someone should write a paper on this 😉
Piper vs. Bret at Wrestlemania 8 for the IC title is a good one. If anything, because Piper mostly wrestles instead of brawls in that match. It was one of the times Piper took a crossbody block and both wrestlers went over the top rope. That’s gotta be one of the most dangerous spots wrestlers can do.
I still say the Jake vs. Model blindfold match at Wrestlemania 7 was fun. Blindfold matches afterward were basically copies of this very match with the same spots. I remember my friends and I erupting in laughter when Martel hit the post with the chair and sold that it hurt his hands. Great stuff. Any blindfold match that happened afterward is a cheap imitation.
Great show, great tribute to the Hot Rod. My memories of Piper was basically in the Georgia area. He terrorized that territory. Feuds with Flair, Steamboat, Masked Superstar and Wahoo McDaniels were EPIC. And before there was Bobby the Brain and Gorilla Monsoon, there was Piper and Gordon Solie and they were perfect. He was ahead of his time. The bottle incident actually happened in Portland, he was supposed to be going against The Sheepherders. That pretty much set the bar, between him bleeding and still was able to work the mic, AWESOME. If you do review his old matches, please start with either early Georgia Championship Wrestling or his early stint in the Mid Atlantic area…keep up the good job and stay frosty…
Crazy gimmick matches. AWA did one, I believe it was during the Team Challenge Series (which in itself was one hell of a gimmick). It was a “football” match. Mike Enos vs The Trooper (Patriot Del Wilkes without a mask). The rules were some kind of hybrid of sumo wrestling, football, kids’ soccer, and dress-up time. Both were in full football uniforms, and they proceeded to basically play the Breakthrough portion of American Gladiators’ Breakthrough and Conquer.
I never saw the “turkey” match, aka the Great American Turkey Hunt. I should try and find it though, because it includes one of my favorites, Colonel DeBeers, and one of my lesser favorites, Jake “The Milkman” Milliman.
I miss the AWA on ESPN Classic. Are those shows still airing?
